چکیده

We investigate the possible consequences of a continously injecting central engine on the Gamma-Ray Burst afterglow emission, focusing more specifically on the possibility that the central source is a highlymagnetized millisecond pulsar. If the initial parameters of the pulsar are within a certain region of the surface field rotation period parameter space, the burst afterglow lightcurves are predicted to show a distinctive achromatic bump or break feature, the onset and duration of which range from minutes to months, depending on the pulsar and the fireball parameters. The detection of or upper limits on such features would provide constraints on the possible progenitor, and on magnetar-like central engine models. An acromatic bump such as that observed in GRB 000301C afterglow may be attributed to a millisecond pulsar with P0 = 7ms and Bp = 5.5× 10 14 G. Gamma-ray burst afterglows and evolution of postburst fireballs with energy injection from strongly magnetic millisecond pulsars

Millisecond pulsars with strong magnetic fields may be formed through several processes, e.g. accretion-induced collapse of magnetized white dwarfs, merger of two neutron stars, and accretion-induced phase transitions of neutron stars. During the birth of such a pulsar, an initial fireball available for a gamma-ray burst (GRB) may occur. We here study evolution of a postburst relativistic fireb...

Grb Afterglow Plateaus and Gravitational Waves: Multi-messenger Signature of a Millisecond Magnetar?

The existence of a shallow decay phase in the early X-ray afterglows of gamma-ray bursts is a common feature. Here we investigate the possibility that this is connected to the formation of a highly magnetized millisecond pulsar, pumping energy into the fireball on timescales longer than the prompt emission. In this scenario the nascent neutron star could undergo a secular bar-mode instability, ...

The X-ray afterglow flat segment in short GRB 051221A: Energy injection from a millisecond magnetar?

In GRB 051221A, an X-ray afterglow flat segment lasting ∼ 10 seconds represents the first clear case of strong energy injection in the external shock of a short GRB afterglow. In this work, we show that a millisecond pulsar with dipole magnetic field ∼ 10 Gauss could well account for that energy injection. The good quality X-ray flat segment thus suggests that the central engine of this short b...

Effects of Environment and Energy Injection on Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows

There is growing evidence that some long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) arise from the core collapse of massive stars, and thus it is inevitable that the environments of these GRBs are preburst stellar winds or dense media. We studied, for the first time, the wind model for afterglows based on the Blandford-McKee self-similar solution of a relativistic shock, and suggested that GRB 970616 is an intera...
